Complications
Botox treatments information: All of our cosmetic neurotoxin services listed below are completed with Botox as it is the only neurotoxin FDA approved to treat all of these areas. Other neurotoxins are often used off label as they are cheaper to obtain, and increase the profit margin for the injector, but that savings is often not passed over to the client. Summers Medical Aesthetics is committed to providing treatment consistent with FDA approved guidelines.
Botox contraindications: Please note, Botox is contraindicated for patients with previous hypersensitivity reactions to Botox, and active infections at the site of injections.
Botox precautions: Please let us know if you have any history of the following:
- Current pregnancy, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant
- Allergy to lactose, albumin, eggs
- Prior sensitivity to Botox
- Facial asymmetry, ptosis, or other anatomic defects
- History of facial nerve palsy or myasthenia gravis
- Previous Botox or other neurotoxin treatment in the last 3 months.
Botox Black Box Warning:
Warning: Distant Spread of Toxin Effect:
Post marketing reports indicate that the effects of Botox and all botulinum toxin products may spread from the area of injection to produce symptoms consistent with botulinum toxin effects. These may include asthenia, generalized muscle weakness, diplopia, ptosis, dysphagia, dysphoria, dysarthria, urinary incontinence, and breathing difficulties. These symptoms have been reported hours to weeks after injection. Swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening and there have been reports of death. The risk of symptoms is probably greatest in children treated for spasticity, but symptoms can also occur in adults treated for spasticity and other conditions, particularly in those patients who have an underlying condition that would predispose them to these symptoms. In unapproved uses, including spasticity in children, and in approved indications, cases of spread of effect have been reported at doses comparable to those used to treat cervical dystonia and upper limb spasticity and at lower doses.
Complications of hyaluronic acid fillers: Early complications of hyaluronic acid fillers include vascular infarction and compromise (can cause tissue necrosis / and blindness), inflammatory reactions, injection -related events and inappropriate placement of filler material.
Late reactions of hyaluronic acid fillers include nodules, granulomas, and discoloration.
Treatment for complications of hyaluronic acid includes urgent and follow up injections of Hylenex to dissolve the filler which will reverse any aesthetic benefit of the filler as well.
Kybella complications:
- Damage to surrounding tissues if injected outside the submental area.
- Skin ulceration if injected into the dermis.
- Asymmetric smile and facial muscle weakness if injected into or near the facial nerve.
- Pain, swelling, and bruising at the injection site.
- Difficulty swallowing.
- Nerve damage.
